ROSS KING INVITES BBC ALBA TO EXPERIENCE THE GLITZ AND GLAMOUR OF HOLLYWOOD

BBC ALBA’s Cathy MacDonald travels to join presenter Ross King and experience the glamour of Hollywood – and soon learns the advantage of Scottish connections in Los Angeles.

In the second programme of a new series of Cuide ri Cathy on BBC ALBA, Cathy and Ross spend a busy day together in California, the place where Ross has been living and working among the stars and celebrities for ten years, with his day-to-day life surrounded by glamour names - a change from his first broadcasting job in Scotland at Radio Clyde.

As Cathy finds out though, Ross makes good use of his Scottish connections, using it to help him grab some of the biggest names on the red carpet.

Speaking about a recent Hollywood bash, Ross said: “Alan Cumming – our old friend from Scotland was there – and it’s great when I can shout for them, because sometimes it’s quite hard to get the celebs.

“Not long ago we were at the Golden Globes and people were wondering if we going to get any stars. And I saw Gerard Butler - or Gerry - so I just shouted ‘Gerry-boy’ and the next minute he turned around and came over. And all the other celebs are kinda going, ‘where has he gone... so we’ll go that way as well.’ So we did a really, really good red carpet.”

King provides Cathy with a guided tour of the state-of-the-art studio he has built in his palatial Hollywood home, a big contrast from his days as a jobbing broadcaster in Scotland – as Ross is keen to point out. Ross explains: “I hope you know that I used to rig the football grounds at Love Street in Paisley and it was cold and it was wet. And now I come in here and I just flick these switches and this all goes back to the UK.”

Mixing with the biggest names in showbiz hasn’t changed him, however, and the Scotsman is very grateful for the opportunities that have arisen for him throughout his career in America.

Ross continues: “I am very lucky. I have to say that every time, whenever I drive through the studio gates to go onto any of the big lots like Warners or Paramount - I’m still that little kid from Knightswood in Glasgow that makes me go ‘oh!’

“I’m always looking around and I wonder who I’m going to see round this corner - I think I’ll always have that. If I get that across to the people at home, that I’m sharing their excitement, then that’s the way to go about it and hopefully that’s what I’m doing.”

As he explains, King’s career in LA began thanks to a competition to find a new weather presenter on KTLA and his involvement with celebrity started on the very first day.

Ross said: “I won the whole audition process, got the job, and they offered me a five year contract and I said, ‘I'll do four weeks’ and that was it. They knew my entertainment background and they told me there could be a vacancy to be the entrainment anchor.

“I then told them I’d do the entertainment and I would do the weather as well because by that time I'd realised that being a weather anchor in L.A. is quite a big gig. When I won the competition it was at Christmas time and they put me on the morning show sitting beside Stevie Wonder. And Stevie Wonder was playing the moothie, and played Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, and I sang along with Stevie Wonder. That was about my first day at work."

When Cathy asks him where he sees himself in the future, Ross reflects: "I've got this really romantic notion that I will be in Italy or Spain or France in this little sort of cottage and maybe I'll be doing some writing or maybe I'll still be doing some radio show, something like that. But the wonderful thing for me is if it ends tomorrow, I've got no complaints at all.”

ROSS KING CUIDE RI CATHY AIR BBC ALBA

Anns an dàrna prògram de Cuide ri Cathy, tha Cathy NicDhòmhnaill a’ siubhal gu Hollywood, Los Angeles, a chur seachad latha trang ann an cuideachd Ross King. Tha Ross air a bhith a’ fuireach agus ag obair an lùib rionnagan mhòra Chalifornia fad deich bliadhna agus na bheatha làitheil tha e air a chuartachadh le brataichean dearga agus daoine ainmeil, atharrachadh mòr bhon chiad obair craolaidh a bh’ aige an Alba aig Radio Chluaidh.

Mar a tha Cathy a’ faighinn a-mach, tha Ross King a’ cur na ceanglaichean Albannach aige gu deagh fheum, gan cleachdadh gus facal fhaighinn air cuid dheth na rionnagan mòra air bratach dearg Hollywood. A’ bruidhinn mu thachartas bho chionn ghoirid tha e ag ràdh –

“Bha Ailean Cumming – ar seann charaid à Alba ann – agus tha e math an uair gun urrainn dhut èigheach orra, oir uaireannan tha e gu math duilich facal fhaighinn air na rionnagan mòra. An t-seachdain eile aig na ‘Golden Globes’ bha sinn a’ beachdachadh am faigheadh sinn gin de na rionnagan. Agus chunnaic mi Gerard Butler, no Gerry oir ’s e caraid dhomh a th’ air a bhith ann fad mo bheatha, mar sin dh’èigh mi Gerry-boy agus an ath mhionaid thionndaidh e mun chuairt agus thàinig e a-nall. Agus tha na rionnagan eile ag ràdh, càit’ an deach e, ‘s fheàrr dhuinne a leantainn. Mar sin, fhuair sinn na thogradh sinn an latha sin air a’ bhratach dhearg.”

Tha King a’ toirt Cathy air chuairt dhen stiùidio a tha e air a thogail san taigh spaideil aige ann a Hollywood, atharrachadh mòr bho na làithean aige an uair a bha e a’ faighinn air a chasan mar chraoladair an Alba.

“Tha min dòchas gu bheil fios agad gum bithinn a’ cuideachadh nan criuthichean telebhisein aig pàircean ball-coise leithid Love Street ann am Pàislig agus bha e fuar agus fliuch. An-diugh thig mi a-staigh an seo, brùthaidh mi putan no dhà ’s tha seo uile a’ dol air ais a Bhreatainn.”

Chan eil a bhith còmhla ri na h-ainmean as motha ann an ‘showbiz’ air atharrachadh ann an dòigh sam bith agus tha an t-Albannach gu math taingeil airson na cothroman a tha air a thighinn na rathad ann an Ameireagaidh.

“Tha mi air leth fortanach. Feumaidh mi a ràdh, gach uair a tha mi a’ draibheadh tro gheataichean an stiùidio agus a’ dol gu lotaichean mòra leithid Warners aig Paramount, chan eil annam fhathast ach an gille beag à Knightswood ann an Glaschu ’s mi dol oh! Tha mi daonnan a’ coimhead mun chuairt agus an uairsin tha thu a’ smaoineachadh cò tha thu a’ dol a dh’fhaicinn timcheall an oisean seo, tha mi a’ smaoineachadh gum bi mi mar sin gu bràth. Agus tha mi a’ smaoineachadh, eil fhios agad, ma thèid agam air sin a chur tarsainn gu daoine aig an taigh gu bheil mi a roinn mar a tha iadsan air am beò-ghlacadh, gur e sin an dòigh a dhol timcheall air agus tha min dòchas gur e sin a tha mi a’ dèanamh.

Thòisich dreuchd King ann an LA nuair às dèidh farpais airson neach-aithris sìde fhaighinn airson seanail KTLA agus fhuair e blas air saoghal nan rionnagan sa chiad latha aige san obair.

“Bhuinnig mi an fharpais, fhuair mi an obair, thabhainn iad cùmhnant còig bliadhna dhomh agus thuirt mi gun dèanainn ceithir seachdainean, sin uile. Agus bha fios aca gur ann bho shaoghal cleasachd a thàinig mi agus thuirt iad, ann an trì mìosan eile dh’fhaodadh gum biodh beàrn anns an roinn sin, mar neach-aithris, agus thuirt mi nì mi e agus nì mi an t-sìde, oir bha mi a-nis a’ tuigsinn gur e obair gu math cudromach a th’ ann an neach-aithris na sìde ann an LA….an uair a bhuinnig mi an fharpais b’ e àm na Nollaig a bh’ ann, agus chuir iad air prògram na maidne mi agus bha mi nam shuidhe ri taobh Stevie Wonder. Agus bha Stevie Wonder a’ cluich a’ mhoothie, agus chluich e ‘Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer,’ agus sheinn mi còmhla ri Stevie Wonder. Sin a’ chiad latha agamsa nam obair ùr.”

An uair a dh’fhaighnich Cathy dha mun àm ri teachd, thuirt e –

“Tha an nòisean romansach seo agam gum bi mi anns an Eadailt no san Spàinn no san Fhraing ann am bothag bheag agus ’s dòcha gum bi mi a’ dèanamh beagan sgrìobhaidh no gum bi mi fhathast a’ dèanamh prògram radio, rudeigin mar sin. Ach fhios agad an rud as mìorbhailtich dhomhsa ma thig seo gu crìoch a-màireach cha bhith gearain sam bith agam. Mar sin an dòigh sa bheil mi a’ coimhead air, gu sònraichte an seo bho Ameireagaidh, o chionn ’s an uair a smaoinicheas mi às dèidh beagan sheachdainean an uair a bha mi a’ fiolmadh air tràigh aig Malibu agus bha mi a’ smaoineachadh ma thèid do tharraing air ais dhachaigh a-màireach, faodaidh mi fhathast a ràdh gun do rinn mi fiolm ann a Hollywood. Bha mi air tràigh ann am Malibu. Mar sin tha a h-uile latha a-nis na bhuannachd.”
